Upgrade! Munich entwickelt A DAY IN THE LIFE als eine experimentale Platform für simultane globale Performances und als Basis für internationale Kollaborationen. Die erste Aufführung der DAY IN THE LIFE-Plattform findet im Rahmen des jährlichen Treffens des Upgrade! International, 29.11.-03.12.06 in Oklahoma City, USA, statt.

Orte in München, Oklahoma City, Boston und Istanbul werden etliche Stunden lang miteinander via Internet verbunden. An jedem dieser Orte werden lokale Aktivitäten in und um den Ort von eine Kamera formal umrahmt und per Streaming-Video an alle anderen Orten gesendet. Das Publikum in jedem Ort sieht Aktivitäten in bis zu vier internationale Städte gleichzeitig und die Performance ist nur dann komplett wenn alle teilnehmende Orte gleichzeitig betrachtet werden.

Schon durch die Rahmung des Beobachtungsausschnitts wird der Alltag an jedem Ort bedeutend, erzeugt durch die Tendenz des Betrachters einen formalen Bezugsrahmen mit Sinn zu füllen. Frei nach dem Motto von Marcel Duchamp: „Es sind die Betrachter, welche die Bilder machen.“

Doch die Sinnproduktion wird nicht nur durch ein formales Setting initiiert, sondern auch bewusst auf bestimmte Themen gelenkt. Dies geschieht durch gezielte mediale Interventionen und Aktionen, die an allen Orten zeitgleich stattfinden und in verabredeten Zeitschienen jeweils auf ein gemeinsames Thema reagieren. Alltag wird zur Performance seiner selbst. Sie entsteht aus der Konfrontation zufälliger Begebenheiten der jeweiligen Orte mit vorbereiteten Darstellungen und interkulturellen Differenzen.

A Stock Market in Life:
Teilnehmende Upgrade!-Knoten werden zu Aktiengesellschaften an der Upgrade Stock Market. Jeder Knoten gewinnt oder verliert an Wert abhängig von der Zahl der Menschen in dem lokalen Raum. Sensoren in dem Eingang zählen wie viele Menschen momentan im Raum sind und schicken diese Information an den Stock Market Zentralserver.

Jeder Upgrade-Knote hat 100 Aktien. Leute können diese Aktien kaufen und verkaufen über eine webbasierten Schnittstelle. Speculation auf die Wert und die dynamische Marktwert der Knoten beeinflüssen zusammen die Gesamtwert. Wenn die Börse schiesst das Geldequivalent der Wert der Aktien wird unter den Aktionär verteilt. Eine "Fieberkurve" der Markt wird an jedem Ort sichtbar sein.

as part of the 2006 Upgrade! International gathering

in Oklahoma City, USA

We are developing A DAY IN THE LIFE as a platform for simultaneous global performances and as a base for international collaborations. As an experimental project, first results will be shown at the annual Upgrade! International gathering happening in Oklahoma City from Nov. 29 -Dec. 3, 2006.

Urban spaces in Munich, Oklahoma City, Boston and Istanbul will be connected with each other via a streaming video server for the duration of the event on November 30. At each location, local activity in and around the space will be formally framed and streamed to all other locations. Thus the audience in each location sees the activities in up to four international cities at one time, and a performance is only complete when viewing all participating locations simultaneously.

The simple act of framing causes the viewer to impart the activities of daily life with meaning, following Marcel Duchamp’s dictum: "It is the viewers who make the pictures.” The construction of meaning is however aided by focusing on specific themes. This is done through targeted media interventions and activities which take place at all participating locations simultaneously and react to common themes. Daily life becomes a performance of itself, a synergistic confrontation of chance occurrences at each location with the prepared interventions, plus the inevitable cultural differences among the four locations that become apparent as reactions to the common theme.

A Stock Market in Life:
Participating Upgrade nodes become traded companies on the Upgrade Stock Market. Each node gains or loses fair value depending on the number of people in its local room. Sensors mounted in the entrance register how many people are in the room at any one time and send this information to the Stock Market central server.

Each Upgrade node has 100 shares. People can buy and sell these shares from a web based interface. Speculation on the values and the dynamic fair value of the nodes together affect the total valuation. When the market closes, the money equal to the stock values is distributed to share holders. Overall market activity is projected in each node location.
