Peter Dowling ist Komponist und Saxophonist und lebt in Schottland. Er arbeitet in vielfältigen Bereichen und mit diversen Medien, seine Musik ist oft durch die Benutzung von Electronik und Improvisation charakterisiert.

Bio:
Dowlings Werke wurden in Grossbritannien und Europa präsentiert, u.a. bei Festivals in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Berlin, München und Lissabon, vor kurzem auch am NIME in Tokyo, Japan und am ICMC in Miami, USA. Seine Musik wurde u.a. aufgeführt von der Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, vom Royal Scottish National Orchestra, vom Paragon Ensemble und vom Hebrides Ensemble. Er erhielt u.a. Stipendien von dem Scottish Arts Council, dem Goethe Institut, Tolbooth und CCA. Er arbeitete mit Choreographen, Tänzern, Regisseuren, Schauspielern und bildenden Künstlern zusammen, zum Beispiel mit Creative Scotland Award Preisträgerin Colette Sadler am NRLA, Palindrome InterMedia Performance Group in Deutschland und dem Videokünstler Rob Kennedy beim Glasgow International Visual Arts Festival. Im Jahr 2004 sendete Bayern2 Radio eine Dokumentation über Dowling, etliche seiner Kollegen und die Untergrund Kompositions- und Improvisationsszene in Glasgow.

Dowling spielte in Grossbritannien und in Europa als Saxophonist und Laptop-Musiker. Er ist Mitgründer des Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra und The KEN Exhibition – einem Festival, das auf der Musik von sechs Komponisten aus Glasgow basiert und seit Dezember 2004 sowohl vom Publikum als auch von Kritikern Beifall erntet.

Diese beiden letzten Tätigkeiten kennzeichnen die kreative Richtung, in die Dowling sich momentan bewegt: weg von traditionellen Modellen von Komposition und Performance zu einem Fokus auf dem Musizieren an sich. Statt für die Instrumente schreibt er nun für die Interpreten und sucht nach Wegen, Improvisation und noten-basierte Arbeitsmethodik, verknupft durch die Elektronik, mit Prozessen der Verbreitung und Vermittlung in Einklang zu bringen.

Zur Zeit ist Dowling Stipendiat des Kulturreferats der Landeshauptstadt München an der Villa Waldberta in Feldafing am Starnberger See. Er arbeitet an einem neuen Ensemble-Stück, der Produktion neuer Musikalben und an der Entwicklung eines Improvisations-Environment für seine solo Laptop-und-Saxophon Aufführungen.

Peter Dowling is a composer and saxophonist based in Scotland. He works in numerous fields and with various media, his music often characterised by a use of electronics and improvisation.

Bio:
Dowling’s work has been presented throughout the UK and in Europe including festivals in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Berlin, Munich, Lisbon and most recently at NIME in Tokyo and ICMC in Miami. His music has been performed by, amongst others, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Paragon Ensemble and Hebrides Ensemble; receiving support from the likes of Scottish Arts Council, Goethe Institut, Tolbooth and CCA. He has collaborated extensively with choreographers, dancers, directors, actors and artists, most notably with Creative Scotland Award winner Colette Sadler at the NRLA, Palindrome InterMedia Performance Group in Germany, and video artist Rob Kennedy at the recent Glasgow International visual arts festival. In 2004 Bayern2 radio station in Germany featured a documentary about Dowling, some of his colleagues and the underground composition and improvisation scene in Glasgow.

Dowling has toured and performed around the UK and Europe as a saxophonist and laptop musician, and is a founder member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra. He is also a founder member of The KEN Exhibition – a festival based around the music of six Glasgow composers that saw its first outing in December 2004 to popular and critical acclaim.

It is these last two associations that characterise the creative direction in which he is currently now heading: a move away from certain traditional models of composition and performance and a focus on the music-making itself, writing for performers rather than instruments and finding ways to reconcile diverse elements (e.g. improvisation and score-based ways of working via the pivot point of electronics) alongside an obsession with the details of dissemination and mediation.

He is currently a guest of the Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München on a three-month stipendium at the ‘Villa Waldberta’ in Feldafing at Starnberger See, where he is working on a new ensemble piece, the production of new albums and also a solo laptop-and-saxophone improvisation-environment for himself to perform.
